About the facilitator:

Writing the Personal Essay

“Writing the Personal Essay” will be held on May 30, 2009 featuring writer Cathy Paras-Lara. A one-day introductory course on the fundamental techniques of the personal essay, the workshop will familiarize the student with the elements of essay, importance of tone and voice, and creative ways in generating ideas for a piece. Cathy is an alumna of Barnard College, Columbia University, where she majored in English Literature with a concentration in Dance. Her book, Everyday Warriors: The Faces and Stories of Breast Cancer, was recently published by the University of Santo Tomas Publishing House.

All classes will held at Trinity Bldg., T.M. Kalaw Ave., Ermita, Manila. Workshop fee is P700 for the poetry appreciation class and P2,500 for the personal essay writing class. Pre-registration is required. To register and for inquiries, email dbw.workshops@gmail.com.

Speaker Isabelita O. Reyes is currently an associate professor at the Department of English and Comparative Literature in UP Diliman, where she obtained her undergraduate, masteral, and doctoral degrees in Creative Writing. She worked as an editor for such publications as LegManila and the Philippines Free Press. She regularly conducts business-writing seminars for different companies and organizations.

Workshop fee is P2,500 inclusive of a book on Grammar Review, handouts, materials, snacks, and a certificate. A down payment of P500 is required to reserve a slot. The deadline for reservations is June 15, 2009. A 10 percent discount will be given to those who pay in full on or before June 8, 2009.

How do you get your message across a global, virtual environment where a deluge of information is triggered by a click of a key or mouse? Learn how to write for online readers with this basic course on online writing by Palanca Award winner Luis Katigbak.

This course will concentrate on writing effectively for the web. It will discuss topics such as structuring content, different writing styles, crafting catchy headlines or titles, writing material for a specific audience, maximizing this vehicle to attract your target readers, and others. Participants will also be given exercises to try their hand at creating their own web space.

Palanca Award winner Luis Joaquin M. Katigbak is a contributing editor for Burn Magazine and writes two weekly columns, "Luis Listens" and "The King of Nothing To Do," for Manila Bulletin. His two books, The King of Nothing to Do, a collection of essays, and Happy Endings, a collection of short stories, were nominated at the National Book Awards. Mr. Katigbak has worked as a senior web editor at Smart Communications and as the editor-in-chief of Pulse.ph, an online music magazine.

Workshop fee is P4,000 inclusive of handouts, materials, snacks, and certificate. Equipment is not included. Participants can bring their own laptop or opt to rent laptops from FHL for an additional fee of P1,000. A down payment of P500 is required to reserve a slot. Free Art Workshops for Kids: Faber Castell

FABER-CASTELL FREE ART WORKSHOPS

Jane Arrieta Ebarle, marketing person of Faber-Castell announces the launching of the Faber-Castell Art Workshop at SM Supermalls. The much-awaited event kicks off for another year of creativity and fun for children age 7 to 12 years old. They are all invited to join and there is no joining fee! The participants will be taught art projects such as sponge art, batik art and wood shavings art using the Faber-Castell Water Colour Pencils.

The materials will be provided by Faber-Castell for free. Officers of Philippine Art Educators Association (PAEA) will facilitate all workshops. The workshop starts at 1:00 pm and ends at 4:30 pm at the Entertainment Area of the SM Supermalls.
